Russ Tillman / The Mill on the Mighty Krökan The Krökan flow near our Swedish cousin's home in Knäred, Sweden. Many times during our visits and usually after dinner, we take a walk to this site where we have a wonderful evening swim. This is one of my most favorite places in Sweden and shortly after our arrival, our first time swim in the Krökan bathes our jet lag away! I know I am in finally back in home Sweden when I feel the powerful and cool river waters flow over my head and the muddy river bottom gets between my toes. Our cousins have bought this mill and are restoring it back to its normal condition. VIEW IMAGE »

Newkirk Johnson / Vånga Kyrka The church (kyrka) in Vånga, Östergötland -- my great grandfather Fredrik Wilhelm Jonasson was born in Vånga. There had been a wedding at this church before I got there. If you look closely, you can see a pink heart-shaped balloon tied to the bush left of the front door.

James Nickel / Uppsala Domkyrkan When the students leave town for summer, Uppsala becomes a huge stage set. The town is magnificent without people; it's the best of times to visit, you see film characters everywhere, you feel a cameraman's presence, you don't want to wake up, you eat a Swedish buffet breakfast in a local hotel, you step outside, you see chained unused bicycles, the students have left, the architecture remains. Kollene Carlsson / currants ooooooh those Swedish red currants are fantastic! Every summer our girls eat possibly an entire bush of berries while we vacation in Sweden! Those currants are so beautiful! They grab a hand full and put the whole branch in their mouths and pull out the stem and the berries burst in their little mouths... the bright red juices drip down to their chins and stain their dresses, but it's the best to have red stained dresses in the summertime! Imagine the wonder... Imagine the curiosity... I wish I could be a child in a forest once again... feeling the damp mist and wondering if a unicorn or a fairy or a little elf was just there... I took this picture of my husband and children exploring this massive masterpiece in nature... Swedish forests really fascinate me. They are mystical and beautiful all in one! The sounds of the Earth beneath you at you hike thud, thud, thud... is such a wonderful sound. I hope my children always have the wonder as I still do in a Swedish forest... VIEW IMAGE »

Kollene Carlsson / picnic is a must in Sweden in the summertime everywhere you look there are people having picnics... Swedes picnic in style! There are so many varieties of picnic blankets... thermoses... baskets... Some people have baskets that they used as children... they use aluminum dishes that they have used hundreds of times... a great deal of skill goes into the perfect picnic... but the best part is once there and together sitting on a gorgeous blanket is to remember how many times that one blanket has been used... how many stories have been told together... the sweet picnic memories are fantastic... breaking bread together and slowing down together... it's beautiful. Newkirk Johnson / Vadstena Rådhus Vilhem Moberg wrote in "A History of the Swedish People (Volume Two)" that this Vadstena City Hall (Rådhus) building was the likely site of an August 16, 1434 rebel uprising led by Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson against Sweden's ruling noblemen and clergy.

Carina Ferrel / Dala outfit for generations I love this country but I also still love Sweden with all my heart. Looking at the pictures reminds me of fond midsommar memories from when I was a little girl in Sweden. It also reminds me of how proud my daughter is to be Swedish and how she has embraced her mother's heritage.
Of the two photos here one is of myself 1966 in Knivsta, Sweden in my Dala outfit, a gift from my mom. In 1982 I left Sweden and moved to San Mateo, California. In 1989 I had the picture taken of my daughter Kimberly Ferrel in the same outfit.
I have had the picture of my daughter on the wall and through the years it has stirred many conversations with my American friends about my Swedish heritage and our Swedish customs. They all have been fascinated by the stories of Julen, Tomten, Maj Stången, Landskaps dräkterna and of course all the weird Swedish food I eat.
Now in a few months my daughter is going to be a mom for the first time and she is having a girl. The Dala outfit will now be given to her to pass on to her daughter. VIEW IMAGE »

Jerry Nelson / Potatis Korv Food traditions for second and third generation Swedish Americans often reflect the peasant foods at the time of emigration in the late 1800s early 1900s. When I was a boy, these sausages were available at a local independent grocery store, and they were highly prized during the Christmas season. The store is long gone, but I make these every year around Christmas time for my family. Most likely, potatis korv is all but forgotten in the homeland; I know when I mentioned them to my cousin in Sweden, she had not heard of them. VIEW IMAGE »
