Dala outfit for generationsBy Carina Ferrel I love this country but I also still love Sweden with all my heart. Looking at the pictures reminds me of fond midsommar memories from when I was a little girl in Sweden. It also reminds me of how proud my daughter is to be Swedish and how she has embraced her mother's heritage. Of the two photos here one is of myself 1966 in Knivsta, Sweden in my Dala outfit, a gift from my mom. In 1982 I left Sweden and moved to San Mateo, California. In 1989 I had the picture taken of my daughter Kimberly Ferrel in the same outfit. I have had the picture of my daughter on the wall and through the years it has stirred many conversations with my American friends about my Swedish heritage and our Swedish customs. They all have been fascinated by the stories of Julen, Tomten, Maj Stången, Landskaps dräkterna and of course all the weird Swedish food I eat. Now in a few months my daughter is going to be a mom for the first time and she is having a girl. The Dala outfit will now be given to her to pass on to her daughter. |
