Vinnova, Sweden's innovation authority, has invested nearly SEK 8 million in creating a test area in the coastal town Västervik in southern Sweden, where industry experts can test how drones can be used in a variety of industries across the country.

The program is expected to last four years and generate over 20 million in turnover. It is hoped enough information will be gathered that new sources of employment and industry can be built from it, making it the Nordic center for drone development.

The town's name, Västervik, means "western bay" and is known as hometown of Björn Ulvaeus of Abba fame, the singer Alice Babs, tennis player Stefan Edberg and legendary author, designer and feminist Ellen Key.
