Just a couple days after her brother's magnificent wedding in which the bride became a princess, Princess Madeleine and her husband Chris O'Neill became parents of a healthy baby boy on Monday afternoon, June 15.

A 21-gun salute welcomed the new prince from Skeppsholmen and saluting stations in Boden, Härnösand, Karlskrona and Gothenburg at noon on Tuesday. On Wednesday, King Carl XVI Gustaf announced the name of Sweden's new prince, his first grandson, the son of Princess Madeleine and Chris O’Neill: He is H.K.H. Prince Nicolas Paul Gustaf, Duke of Ångermanland.

Two of the prince's three names come from his grandfathers. The name Paul is his father's middle name and the first name of his paternal grandfather, who died in 2004. Of course Gustaf has been in his mother's family and is one of his grandfather's names.

Prince Nicolas Paul Gustaf is sixth in line to the Swedish throne (after his aunt Crown Princess Victoria and her daughter Princess Estelle, uncle Prince Carl Philip, mother Princess Madeleine and sister Princess Leonore), and is the second child of the princess and her British-born American husband Chris O'Neill. The new prince's big sister, Princess Leonore, was born in New York in 2014 while they lived there, but the family returned to Sweden in early 2015 and will move to London this fall, to be where O’Neill's work and family are. Thursday morning, a Te Deum thanksgiving service in Royal Chapel at Stockholm Palace in honor of the birth.
