Swedish engineers have solved an age-old dilemma — increased power and performance along with a class leading MPG – benefitting Volvo drivers and the environment.
“Drive-E” stands for Volvo’s innovative thinking behind a whole range of engine technologies that provide more efficiency and greater driving pleasure, while also respecting the environment.
     “We have created smaller, more intelligent engines with power curves that give exciting drivability compared with engines with more cylinders, yet deliver the fuel economy of only four cylinders. In addition, by adding electrification, such as plug-in hybrid technology, we will reach power figures in the V8 territory,” says Derek Crabb, Vice President Powertrain Engineering at Volvo Car Group.
     Look under the hood of the all-new 2015 Volvo, and you’ll be looking at the future of automobiles. The new Drive-E powertrain debuts as the first of a family of new engines that will deliver powerful performance while using up to 26% less fuel.
     When Volvo first came to the U.S., Americans wanted big cars with lots of horsepower, fins and chrome. Imagine a local racetrack in the late 1950s. Drivers are taking their behemoths off the trailers. Then some guy comes putt-putt-putting up to the pits in what looks like a 1940-something Ford. He hops out and tapes over the headlights. And when the green flag drops, he blows everyone’s doors off. In a Volvo.
     That happened at tracks all over America, and not only on racetracks but in endurance rallies, hill climbs, and sprints. Volvo started to win the hearts of auto enthusiasts and those in the know.
     The Drive-E program is the evolutionary result of the Volvo quest to get more power from more efficient engines. The first two Drive-E engines are beauties.
     The all-new, 2.0-liter, direct-injection, turbo four-cylinder that powers several new Volvo models offers a no-compromise approach. It delivers fantastic power and performance along with excellent fuel economy. The combination of the new engine and a new eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission comprises the foundation of the Drive-E program. In this race, both Volvo drivers and the environment are big winners.
     First, the environment: The new engines are smaller and lighter than the five- and six-cylinder engines they will eventually replace across the Volvo line, and their lighter weight helps boost fuel efficiency. Plus, the Drive-E brand designates more than engines: It also covers a slew of environment-oriented company programs, including sustainable, efficient and clean manufacturing processes and the wide use of recyclable materials.
     Meanwhile, technophiles will find plenty of details to admire in Volvo’s new Drive-E engines, including automatic start-stop, which conserves fuel in urban driving, and brake energy regeneration, which recaptures energy created as the car is slowed and converts it to electricity. Because a lot of energy is wasted as heat, Volvo designed a variable electric water pump that better manages the heat the engine creates.
