April 23 in Swedish History
1955: The first Swedish charter flight lands on the Spanish Mediterranean island Majorca. It is arranged by Flyg- och Bussresetjänst in Örebro and reaches its destination after a grasshopper flight with Sweden’s first 26 charter tourists.

The trip cost 1,095 SEK ($165) per person (accommodations are not included in the price). The introduction of three weeks paid holiday (in 1951) and an increased material standard during the 1950s increase Swedes’ interest in traveling abroad, and in the following year of 1956, 10,000 Swedes went on charter trips.

These days over two million Swedes take off for a few moments in the sun every year. Spain is still popular along with Greece, Turkey and Thailand.
