League leaders Elfsborg dropped points for a second straight match, settling for a scoreless draw with Mjällby July 8 in front of more than 10,000 fans at Borås Arena.
After riding an 8-game winning streak to the top of the standings, Elfsborg has cooled off considerably, going 2-2-1 in its last five matches. Second-place Malmö lost a point as it slumped to a defeat at the hands of Örebro. Elfsborg now holds a 6-point lead over MFF.
David Elm, Stefan Ishizaki, Viktor Claesson and Johan Larsson all had golden chances to give Elfsborg three points as the league leaders kept the visitors at bay for much of the match. Elm fired a shot off the woodwork in the 11th minute, while Ishizaki had a shot carom off the post and out of the net at the 29-minute mark.
Elfsborg and its fans started to celebrate in the 51st minute when Claesson beat Mjällby net minder Mattias Asper only to see a defender clear the ball of the goal line at the last second.
Larsson had a chance 20 minutes later when he rounded Asper at the edge of the penalty area but could not put the ball into the net from a tough angle.
The draw was the first of the season for Elfsborg, which has 31 points from 14 matches.
