AIK, Mjällby battle to scoreless draw
AIK opened its final season at Råsunda Stadium March 31 wiith a scoreless draw against Mjällby. AIK, got the type of 12th man effect it wanted from its fans, but not even that was enough to beat Mjällby net minder Mattias Asper. The Mjällby goalkeeper, who spent three seasons with AIK, made several key saves but most important controlled the penalty area as AIK’s new-look offense seemed to push the ball on net almost at will.
Newcomer Celso Borges electrified the 20,000-crowd in attendance as he danced and controlled the flow of the game. However, it simply wasn’t enough to beat Asper. The Costa Rican international called his first game at Råsunda, “infectious.”
“The crowd there is just amazing. It infects you like a virus,” Borges said. “They are hands down the most passionate fans anywhere.”
