Long a doormat, Gefle and its goalkeeper Mattias Hugosson, are turning the league on its ear as it moved into fourth place after Hugosson notched his seventh straight shutout in a 1-0 win at home over IFK Göteborg. Hugosson has not allowed a goal 649 minutes and is just 159 away from breaking the all-time shutout record former Halmstad goalkeeper Håkan Svensson set in 1999.
“It has been really nice,” said Mikael Dahlqvist, who scored the lone goal against Göteborg. “We’ve been playing really well and a lot is because of Mattias. We feel as though we can beat anyone because of him.”
Gefle helped its own cause during its streak as it either beat or drew with five teams ahead of it in the standings - Elfsborg, Malmö, Helsingborg, Örebro and Kalmar. About the only thing the Gävle-based team didn’t do was score. Gefle has won four of the seven matches in which Hugosson has had a shutout but also scored just four goals.
Despite the lack of offense, Gefle has picked up 15 points and rose eight places since the streak began. Gefle is now in fourth place with 24 points, seven behind league leaders Helsingborg.
Helsingborg held onto its lead as it knocked off Halmstad. Elfsborg remained in second place, five points back, with a win over Syrianska.
Djurgården and AIK each ran their winning streaks to four games, while Trelleborg continued to free fall, losing for the fourth straight round.
