“It’s like when Manchester United play Chelsea,” he said. “We completely cancel each other out.”

Helsingborg and Elfsborg engaged in a tense, often tentative match in HIF’s home opener, with just an own goal in the 62nd minute separating the two teams.

“Both teams were so afraid of making a mistake they went out and did everything they could to prevent the other team from really doing anything,” Karlsson said. “I really expected a much more open kind of game.”

A mistake is all that separated the two teams as Helsingborg capitalized on own goal to grab the win. Alexander Gerndt initially received credit for a goal at the 62-minute mark when he apparently banked a shot off the leg off Elfsborg defender Anton Lans. The official scorer, however, ruled it own goal. Either way, the goal gave HIF a 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, Elfsborg had a golden chance to equalize. Helsingborg and Swedish international defender Peter Larsson used his hand to control a pass inside the penalty area and referee Jonas Eriksson awarded a penalty kick.
Stefan Ishizaki strode the spot to the kick only to put his shot wide of the goal.
The win have Helsingborg a 2-0 record at the start of the season while Elfsborg fell to 1-0-1.

“It’s disappointing to leave Olympia without at least point,” said Elfsborg manager Magnus Haglund. “We see them again in 10 rounds, so we’ll see what happens.”
