It looks like the only way to ground high-flying Helsingborg is to field 11 goalkeepers. That’s essentially what GAIS did May 3 as it held the Allsvenskan league leaders to a scoreless draw at Gamla Ullevi.
Wanderson Do Carmo, the budding supertalent of GAIS, was a non-factor as the Göteborg club packed the back line with players. Helsingborg was able to do little on a bumpy pitch that prevented the first-place side from playing its neat, ball-on-the-ground style of attack.
“I knew after 15 minutes that it was going to be a scoreless game,” said Helsingborg manager Conny Karlsson. “All they did was play defense.”
The two teams slogged their way across the wet, pitted field at Gamla Ullevi for 90 minutes with neither really gaining an advantage over the other. Do Carmo, the Brazilian striker at GAIS, didn’t have a shot on goal while GAIS as a whole only managed to test HIF goalkeeper Pär Hansson once in 90 minutes.
The draw kept Helsingborg on top of the standings with 26 points. HIF has yet to lose this season and is 8-2-0 after 10 matches.
Second-place Malmö remained three points behind Helsingborg with a 2-0 win May 2 at the Swedbank Arena. Guillermo Molins had a goal and an assist for Malmö, which has 23 points.
