Throughout his career in hockey, Färjestad captain Jörgen Jönsson has accomplished just about everything a player could.
Now, make that everything.
Jönsson became the all-time leading scorer in the Swedish Elitserien Jan. 17 when he assisted on a goal by Lee Goren in the third period of Färjestad’s 6-2 win over Rögle at the Lofbergs Lila Arena in Karlstad. The point gave Jönsson 527 in his Elitserien career, eclipsing the record of 526 by Janne Larsson.
“It’s a neat proof of your success,” Jönsson said.
The Farjestad captain managed to beat Djurgården center Fredrik Bremberg to the record. Bremberg notched three assists to lead DIF past MoDo 5-3. Bremberg has 526 career points.
“I had no idea it was so close,” Jönsson said with a smile, “I wish I could have gotten two points. That would have made it tougher for him to top me.”
Jönsson said even if Bremberg does manage to top his point record, “it can’t take away from the accomplishment.”
“It’s nice to have the record,” he said.
Jönsson already owns the record for most games played in the Elitserien with 700 games. He has 228 career goals and 229 career assists. He also has the record for most games played for the Swedish national team and is arguably the most decorated hockey player in Swedish history with four Elitserien titles, 11 World Cup medals including two gold medals and two Olympic gold medals.
Despite his accomplishments, the 36-year-old former New York Islander said he had no plans to slow down.
“You get the record and you go on,” he said. “It’s something no one else can do now, so that’s fun, but there is still more work to do.”
It is the second time Jönsson has earned a record against Rögle, his first team in the Elitserien. Jönsson became the all-time games played leader against Rögle, and now the all-time points leader.
“It’s quite moving since I have only played for Rögle and Färjestad,” he said. “It makes it quite special.”
The sellout crowd in Karlstad gave Jönsson a two-minute standing ovation, something the Wolfpack rather sheepishly acknowledged.
“It’s nice, but when it goes on for so long, you don’t know what to do,” he said. “It’s not a big arena and there’s no where to hide.”
The victory was just as important as the point record. Färjestad is now just three points behind Elitserien leaders Linkoping with just eight games left in the regular season. Linköping leads the league with 72 points. HV 71 is second with 70 and Färjestad third with 69. Luleå (63), Brynäs (63), Skellefteå (60), Frölunda (60) and Timrå (59) round out the top eight spots.
The top eight teams all qualify for the playoffs.
