She has been dead for 22 years, but Swedish film star Greta Garbo (1905-1990) keeps her allure. At a recent auction by Julie’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, sales of Garbo’s belongings brought in 10.7 million SEK ($1,610,632). “Greta Garbo brought in Marilyn Monroe-like prizes today,” says Martin Nolan, who was responsible for the auction. Some 800 things were sold, and altogether they brought home three times more than the auction firm had calculated. “Her beauty and her extraordinary star power on the silver screen coupled with her sense of fashion proved to be an unbeatable combination during these two days.” Among the collectables were a pair of sunglasses sold for 92 000 SEK ($13,848) and a set of sterling silver plates sold for 120 000 SEK ($18,062). The auction took place on a Friday and Saturday, and included an extensive assortment of clothing and accessory items from designers like Emilio Pucci, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Givenchy.
