Royal family prepares for Olympics
The Swedish Olympians will have a royal cheering squad. Crown Princess Victoria is expected to be in London next week, following a royal tradition. Throughout the years, King Carl XIV Gustaf has seen high jumper Stefan Holm and triple jumper Christian Olsson win gold medals in Athens 2004, and table tennis player Jan-Ove Waldner take gold in Barcelona in 1992, and who can forget the Olympics in Munich in 1972, when he met his bride-to-be Silvia Sommerlath?
But this time around, it’s the younger generation that first takes seats in the gallery. Besides the Crown Princess, Prince Daniel and Prince Carl Philip will be following the games. According to the royal calendar, they will all arrive next week.

“There’s no detailed program for them as of yet,” says Bertil Ternert, Director of the Information and Press Department at the Royal Swedish Court. “That will be established once they’ve arrived.” Presumably, the Crown Princess and the two Princes will watch the Swedish female handball players in their match against Norway Monday evening and Sarah Sjöström’s 200-meter freestyle swim Tuesday evening, if she goes into finals. The King and the Queen will be at the Olympics from August 7, and will remain there until the closing ceremony.
