The Swedish Queen celebrated a birthday and also being the Swedish queen who's been on the throne the longest.

Queen Silvia turned 68 on December 23. That’s something to celebrate. But wait, there was more than a birthday… Silvia can also celebrate being the Swedish queen who’s been on the throne the longest.
This used to be a title reserved for Queen Sofia (1836-1913, spouse of King Oscar II). Sofia was queen of Sweden for 35 years, six months and sixteen days, a record that Silvia broke on Sunday, Dec. 25. But the Swedish queen wants a relaxed celebration. The Royal Swedish Courts says there will only be one small party.

“The entire family gathered at Drottningholm Palace to celebrate the Queen’s birthday. Princess Madeleine was coming from the U.S. to participate as well,” said Bertil Ternert, Director of Press and Information at the Royal Swedish Court.

Reason to celebrate: Queen Silvia turned 68 on Dec. 23. But she can also celebrate being the queen who’s been on the Swedish throne the longest.

Queen Sofia (1836-1913, spouse of King Oscar II) used to be the queen who’d been on the Swedish throne the longest. But on Sunday, Silvia will break the record, which by the way is 35 years, six months and sixteen days. The longest-reigning queen ever is Queen Victoria, who reigned for 63 years and 7 months. The longest-reigning monarch ever was Sobhuza of Swaziland, who reigned 82 years and 254 days. Topping the list of current reigning monarchs by length of reign is King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, who has reigned for over 65 years.
