Stevens's earlier show, the story of Swedish diva Zarah Leander was not a story told with ease, besmirched as she was with Nazi-Germany. Leander was born in Karlstad in 1907, and died in Stockholm in 1981. Just like Stevens - and ironically so - Leander had Jewish grandparents but nevertheless became a star in Hitler's Germany, a country she didn't leave until 1943. At the start of that successful show, I remember vividly how Stevens recounts a telephone conversation with her mother.

Leander, the only one left to do? Cabaret singers haven’t usurped upon Leander who after her return to Sweden in 1943 never really got her Swedish career back on track.
