Dream Team made believers of all. Today is one of the most historic occasions in Sport. The oldest international trophy was contested on San Francisco Bay, one of the best urban stadiums for sailing, and in the longest and most dramatic contest the regatta was won by the Defender of the America's Cup. So the Cup will remain with Oracle Team USA and the Golden Gate Yacht Club.
Today USA beat New Zealand by more than half a minute in a dual match point duel (8-8) in Race 18 on Day 19 (of 17 scheduled days of racing. A week ago New Zealand was but one point away (8-1) from taking home the Cup. But after a week stringing together eight straight wins, USA prevailed, completing the regatta 9-8.
The credit goes to Larry Ellison, for the vision; SF Mayor Gavin Newsom for the political pressure to make it happen here; for CEO Russell Coutts and Helmsman Jimmy Spithill for their persistence; for the entire crew and shore team for their commitment that exceeded all expectations in continually improving their boat's performance; for Dean Barker, Ray Davies and the entire team of Emirates Team New Zealand for their patience, composure, and excellent competition; and to the New Zealanders visiting San Francisco for their wonderful, fun loving support of their team.
