The Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle opens an exhibition of the Sámi, the indigenous population of northern Europe, on August 31. On view through November 4, Eight Seasons in Sápmi, the Land of the Sámi People is a collaborative effort among Danish-American photographer Birgitte Aarestrup; Ájtte, the Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum; and Sámi Duodji, the Sámi Handicraft Foundation; both institutions located in Jokkmokk, Sweden.
Having just finished the newly released book, An Account of the Sámi, which is the first exploration of the Sami people by a Sami to reach a larger Nordic audience, this is an exhibition we look forward to. (Published by Chicago based Nordic Studies Press, ISBN: 0-9772714-5-5)
In conjunction with the exhibition, the Museum will offer several related programs beginning with two lectures on Wednesday, August 29, and subsequent events will continue through October. For more info, see www.nordicmuseum.org or call 206.789.5707
