At a recent meeting of Sveaborg Lodge (Vasa Order of America) in Concord, California, members were entertained with Swedish folk dances by its youth group, Vasablad. Rosemary Fassl leads of the group, which studies Scandinavian culture, folk dances and songs, culminating with the annual Julfest in December. Challena Gilbert reigned over last year's fest as Lucia. Vasablad also gives an annual educational scholarship, open to members or children and grandchildren of members. Criteria for selection are scholarship, need, and interest and involvement in Scandinavian cultural activities.
Sveaborg Lodge celebrated its 86th anniversary this year, chaired by Ray Ternstrom. The group usually meets the third Friday of each month. Coming events include a tri-lodge picnic in July, a knytkalas (potluck) in August, salmon dinner and speaker from Iceland in September, plus its famous annual Swedish Pancake Breakfast, also in September.
