“It’s amazing,” said the overwhelmed Hjelle after having been crowned with pomp and circumstance by last year’s Miss Norway of Greater New York, Sarah Lindland, at The Norwegian Christian Home and Health Center in Brooklyn. “It’s such an honor!”
Hjelle who works for Safe Horizon, will, with her new title, represent Norway in New York during the upcoming year. She will participate in the 17th of May Parade and other activities, and she will also visit Norway – the country where her parents were born.
“She is an extraordinarily accomplished young woman,” said Harriet Nilsen, head judge in this year’s jury. “All the candidates were poised and accomplished, it was difficult to pick a winner.”
But evidently Hjelle had that little extra that made her stand out among the eight women - all of whom had ties to Norway. She also looked beautiful in her long, red gown.
Miss Norway of Greater New York is sponsored by the Norwegian Immigration Association, Rolf Kristian Stang was the MC and Jeannie Eriksson Widman Andersen and Wayne Soderlund entertained with accordion music; there was a raffle with many prizes and a cute Little Miss Norway Parade.
