Swedish Spotlight at the Newport Beach, Cal. Film Festival
Tuesday April the 27th the Swedes are taking over the Newport Beach Film Festival by arranging a Swedish Spotlight with a movie screening of the Swedish film “Prinsessa” (Starring Maja) followed by a block party at Fashion Island.
The Swedish Spotlight starts at 7.45 pm on Tuesday evening the 27th of April with a movie screening of the film Prinsessa. The film is about Maja, an 18-year old girl who lives in a hopelessly small town in Sweden and whose biggest dream is to become an actress. Though Maja is heavily overweight, clumsy, and socially inept, this doesn’t discourage her. When Maja one day meets Erika, a 28-year old documentary film maker from Stockholm she sees her chance to become famous. The only problem is that Erika’s idea differs; she sees an excellent opportunity to create a tragicomic piece of entertainment at Maja’s expense. Prinsessa is a Swedish comedy/drama feature produced and directed by Teresa Fabik and Sandra Harms. The location of the movie screening is the Island Theatre at Fashion Island and afterwards everyone will get the opportunity to ask questions about the film to some of the people involved with the movie.
The after party which includes free food; drinks and entertainment starts directly after the movie screening and is organized as a block party at Fashion Island. One of the main sponsors of the night is Absolut, the Swedish vodka producer who is bringing special bartenders and drinks to the event. Organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in collaboration with the Swedish Film Institute and the Swedish Institute this 40-plus film survey encompasses silent film treasures right up to the recent prizewinning Sundance charmer The King of Ping Pong. NORTHERN EXPOSURES: Social Change and Sexuality in Swedish Cinema, 1913-2010 runs from April 16 to May 4 aims to chronicle the development not only of Swedish filmmaking but of the nation itself. ..or, at Tribeca Film Festival
Established in 2002 by Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro, and Craig Hatkoff, the Tribeca Film Festival is a response to the September 11 attacks and the consequent loss of vitality in the TriBeCa neighborhood of Manhattan.
This year, two Swedish films will be shown at the prestigious festival. Tarik Saleh’s “Metropia”, an animated sci-fi film that takes a futuristic look at a terrifying Europe where the world is running out of oil, features actors Vincent Gallo and Juliette Lewis. “Metropia” has already been seen at a number of foreign film festivals, including the ones in Venice, Montreal, and San Francisco. “Mormors öga” (Grandmother’s eye) by Jonathan Lewald is a black-and-white silent film that consists of one constant motion from distance to up close, all the way into the eye of an elderly lady.
